Gallatin County Nixon Bridge

Overview

Stahly Engineering assisted Gallatin County with a TSEP Construction Grant application to receive funding to replace Nixon Bridge. Stahly completed site survey, structure design, FWP coordination, environmental permitting, project bidding and construction administration.

Public meetings, communication, and involvement were extremely important during the grant application process for Nixon Bridge. Nixon Bridge acts as a sole point of access for a 216-parcel subdivision, with an Average Daily Traffic value of approximately 407 trips per day. Residents of the affected area were very active in voicing their concerns and providing input, and ensuring there were ample opportunities for them to speak was of high importance to Gallatin County. In addition to County Commission meetings, evening meetings were held near the affected community, encouraging attendance and public participation. The existing bridge is adjacent to an FWP Fishing Access, and the proposed realignment of the bridge requires alterations to be made to the existing fishing access. Coordination with FWP is imperative during this process, and Stahly is currently working with FWP regional staff, as well as headquarters staff, to ensure the process is seamless and amenable for all parties.

Details

Nixon Bridge is an antiquated truss bridge, and a group of individuals dedicated to saving the bridge from demolition has emerged. Stahly Engineering understands that there is a high likelihood of this occurring for both the Williams Bridge and the Meridian Bridge as well. Working through the issues with this group and Gallatin County for Nixon Bridge will provide the necessary relationships to facilitate the next bridge replacement project.

The existing bridge acts as a single point of access for a large subdivision; therefore, the new bridge location was designed just upstream of the existing bridge to allow the existing bridge to remain in use during construction of the new bridge. Realignment of the new bridge resulted in coordination with FWP as an adjacent fishing access site was impacted, and a “land swap” needed to take place. Survey data collection utilized sonar equipment to collect topographic data of the bottom of the channel. The piles at the center pier required preboring.

Items to be noted from the bridge design include:

  • The new bridge location was designed just upstream of the existing bridge to allow the existing bridge to remain in use during construction of the new bridge.
  • Realignment of the new bridge resulted in required alterations to the adjacent fishing access site; therefore, coordination with FWP was imperative to the success of the project.  A transfer of land was needed between Gallatin County and FWP.
  • Survey data collection utilized sonar equipment to collect topographic data of the bottom of the channel.
  • The piles at the center pier required preboring.
